The book compares two preeminent theologians, Sri Ramanuja of the Hindu tradition and Friedrich Schleiermacher of the Christian tradition. Is it just a religious text? When was it composed? How relevant is it to the modern world?
This book answers these foundational questions and more. It critically examines the Bhagavad-Gita in terms of its liberal, humanist and inclusive appeal, bringing out its significance for both present times and novel applications. The author elaborates the philosophy underlying the text as well as its ethical and spiritual implications.
He also responds to criticisms that have been levelled against the text by Ambedkar, D. Kosambi and, more recently, Amartya Sen.
With additional material including chapter summaries of the Bhagavad-Gita, the second edition of the volume proposes new ways of utilising the text in diverse fields, such as business and management and scientific research. Eclectic and accessible, this work will be of interest to scholars of philosophy, religion, history, business and management studies, as well as the general reader. I found this book an illumining experience.-Julius Lipner FBA, Professor of Hinduism and the Comparative Study of Religion and Fellow of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, UK A fascinating book which throws new light on the Gita, and should help to make it more accessible to those who wish to read this great spiritual classic.-Keith Ward FBA, Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus and Fellow of Christ Church College, University of Oxford, UK Ithamar Theodor approaches the ancient Bhagavad Gita with a modern mind and finds much in it that deserves our attention. Locating his study within Comparative Theology and identifying the various layers of meaning in the text will help those unacquainted with it to find their way through this complex classic. Combining the philosophical-theoretical with the ethical-practical the author shows the universal relevance of the Gita's teaching. Since Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan nobody has offered as penetrating a study of this classic as Ithamar Theodor has done.-Klaus Klostermaier FRSC, Distinguished Professor of Hinduism and Religious Studies Emeritus, University of Manitoba, Canada The Bhagavad Gita is a unique literary creation but deciphering its meaning and philosophy is not easy or simple.
This careful study of the Bhagavad Gita approaches the ancient text with a modern mind and offers a unifying structure which is of a universal relevance. Combining the philosophical-theoretical with the ethical-practical, Ithamar Theodor locates his study within comparative theology and identifies the various layers of meaning. Author by: Chakravarthi Ram-PrasadLanguange: enPublisher by: Bloomsbury Publishing USAFormat Available: PDF, ePub, MobiTotal Read: 50Total Download: 422File Size: 44,7 MbDescription: Winner of the Best Book in Hindu-Christian Studies Prize (2013/2014) from the Society for Hindu-Christian Studies. The Gita is a central text in Hindu traditions, and commentaries on it express a range of philosophical-theological positions. Two of the most significant commentaries are by Sankara, the founder of the Advaita or Non-Dualist system of Vedic thought and by Ramanuja, the founder of the Visistadvaita or Qualified Non-Dualist system. Their commentaries offer rich resources for the conceptualization and understanding of divine reality, the human self, being, the relationship between God and human, and the moral psychology of action and devotion. This book approaches their commentaries through a study of the interaction between the abstract atman (self) and the richer conception of the human person. While closely reading the Sanskrit commentaries, Ram-Prasad develops reconstructions of each philosophical-theological system, drawing relevant and illuminating comparisons with contemporary Christian theology and Western philosophy. Four books are required to be studied for a thorough understanding of the religious philosophy of Visishtadvaita. They are Sri Bashyam, Gita Bashyam, Bhagavad Vishayam and Rahasya Traya Saram.
Sri Bhashya, the commentary on Brahma Sutras, is polemical in nature meant for those who are well versed in the exercise of Nyaya or Logic. But the Gita Bhashyam is free from polemics, meant for all discerning public. Three great teachers of the tradition, namely, Ramanuja, his predecessor Yamuna and his successor, Deshika, have dealt with the subject matter of Gita. Deshika's Gitartha Sangraha (Tamil) is used to sum up the chapters of Gita.
Finally, references are made, where necessary, to a few books in English written by modern scholars for further reading.
